Woodstoves range from simple steel boxes with a door and a flue to ornate designs incorporating glass, steel, ceramic, and firebrick. All woodstoves, however, function the same in that they regulate the flow of air to the fire in the firebox. By reducing the air flow to the fire the rate at which the fuel is consumed can be controlled, the fire burns hotter for increased combustion efficiency, and the draft is reduced drawing less cold air into the room while increasing heat transfer.

Traditional open fireplaces have at most about a 15% heating efficiency and often much less. Older style woodstoves increase the heating efficiency of the fire to 30-50% while many modern designs acheive over 70% efficiency.

If you're using a woodstove, you need to know what's going on inside your chimney.
