Pellet stoves offer several advantages over traditional woodstoves. The first advantage is a much longer burn time. Most pellet stoves have a hopper with an auger drive that slowly feeds pellets to the fire box. One can simply fill the hopper and walk away, the pellet stove will self feed up to 24 hours in some models.

A second advantage is that pellet stoves operate with much cooler surface temperature then woodstoves. This reduces the threat of burns and increases the suitable installation areas in the home.

Another advantage is the pellets themselves are easier to handle and produce far less dirt in the home then traditional logs.

Some disadvantages of pellet stoves are their dependence on an electrical source to operate automaticaly, a constant low level noise from their moving parts, and greater maintanance costs due to their greater complexity.
