A fireplace insert is a woodstove or pellet stove (or even a corn stove) that is designed to fit inside the firebox of a traditional masonary fireplace. The advantage of the fireplace insert is that it is many times more effiecent then an open fireplace. By installing the fireplace insert in an existing fireplace one also makes use of unused floorspace without crowding the room with a woodstove.

Many fireplace inserts, particularly older models are installed with direct vents into the chimney. The best installations for both safety and efficiency, however use a stainless steel liner all the way to the top of the chimney. It is highly recommended that all fireplace inserts be installed in this manner.
